when fortune permitted, wood went boston , studied short time in studio of chester harding, portrait painter. in 1850 married miss minerva robinson, living in waterbury, vermont, , in same year built summer home in carpenter gothic style on west side of mountain gorge through road leads northfield. named home after wife, making use of latin synonym, athenwood.
during 1850s, found means of visiting galleries in london, paris, rome , florence, having painted portraits in canada, washington , baltimore. first european visit, in 1858, shared mrs. wood. upon return painted portraits in nashville , louisville, beginning @ former place fiddler, completed years afterwards , included in thomas w. wood collection in montpelier gallery.
at age of 43, artist permanently settled himself in new york city, opening studio figure painter. in 1866, 8 years after exhibition of first work in national academy of design, baltimore newsvendor (1858). painting sold mistake 2 persons, mr. j. c. brune of baltimore , mr. robert l. stuart of new york, resulting in long, expensive lawsuit, terminated in favor of mr. brune.
during residence in louisville, wood painted contraband, recruit , veteran, suggested sight of black man in light brown jeans, had 1 leg , hobbling along on home-made crutches. celebrated work commemorates transition of african american slavery freedom , property of metropolitan museum of art.
in 1869, wood elected associate of national academy of design and, in 1871, academician. became president of american water color society in 1878 , served in office until 1887. acted vice-president of national academy of design period of twelve years beginning in 1879. in 1891 became president of academy. in achieving , discharging functions of these offices many years, surrounded artists of distinction, wood evidenced quality , high character of personal attributes, deep knowledge of art, unequaled courtesy , judgement, acknowledged value of own work and, above all, unusual capacity acquiring friendship , commanding utmost respect result of life , noble heart.
