in battle sequence, player may repeatedly attack pressing button beat of background music
mother 3 retains turn-based battle system featured in earthbound. when player comes contact enemy in overworld, game transitions battle screen. battles viewed first-person perspective, showing enemies against distorted, animated background. player can assign each character in party perform action, such attacking enemy or using items restore hp or pp. characters can utilize psychic-based abilities referred psi, includes stronger attacks , healing abilities, , require pp execute. earthbound, combat uses rolling health system: when 1 of player s characters injured, hp gradually roll down, similar odometer, rather decremented. allows mortally wounded character perform actions attacking or healing themselves, long player acts enough. if character loses hp, become unconscious , cannot participate unless revived character. player loses battle if characters become unconscious; player given option continue play nearest save point, half dp on person.
combat in mother 3 includes unique musical combo system not seen in previous mother games. when 1 of player s characters directly attacks enemy weapon, can repeatedly attack enemy pressing button in time beat of background music, each enemy possessing musical theme different rhythms. using system, player can attack enemy sixteen times in row. when correct beat not apparent, player can put enemy sleep isolate beat music.
