the anlo ewe people settled in westernmost end of region


the ewe people traced original settlement in oyo state of western nigeria. thought migrated present home notsie, togo sometime in later part of seventeenth century. move said more of escape migration regime change in city. upon first arrival in notsie, current king, adela atogble, received them well, after death successor, agorkoli, ruled oppressively upon ghana ewes. ordered elders killed.the king agorkoli treated people badly . city of notsie circumscribed large defensive wall became barrier ewe devising escape. upon consultation of hidden elder, tegli, ewe came extravagant plan of escape.the people paned escape well. days women of group moisten wall in 1 place during daily clothes washing activities. when wall weak enough, plan culminated in gathering of ewe, tegli drawing “sword of liberation” summoning gods, , piercing wall proclaiming, “o mawuga kitikata, ʋuʋɔ na mi ne miadogo, azɔ adzo” (oh great god kitikata, open door walk through).when escaping walked backwards , seperated ,so king,king agorkoli not trace or find them again or find them anymore.


most groups settled in villages in coastal regions of togo, benin, settling in south-eastern parts of volta region of ghana, many of associated slave trade affected ewe populations. avenor ewe settled north of anlo , found in akatsi south district , akatsi north district. northern migration result of frequent slave raids , spread ewe people throughout southern togo, southern benin south-western nigeria. shallow waters , many islands of bight of benin provided safe-haven aggressive slave traders.
