according randall grahm, bonny doon vineyard began foolish attempt replicate burgundy in california, after difficulty creating great american pinot noir, realized rhone varietals better suited central coast climate. grahm began experimenting rhone grapes , blended wines, , in 1986, bonny doon vineyard released inaugural vintage (1984) of le cigare volant, homage châteauneuf-du-pape, wine become winery s flagship label.
after vines in own vineyard destroyed pierce s disease in 1994, bonny doon supported wine production purchasing grapes other california vineyards, vineyards in oregon (including bethel heights vineyard) , europe. winery grew in period popular cardinal zin, big house , pacific rim labels, reaching peak production in 2006, after selling more 450,000 cases of wine.
