the town farming community. 1 of neighbor farmers david ward king, inventor , promoter of king road drag—an invention 2 logs lashed , dragged behind horse or mule teams effective , inexpensive method grade dirt roads. horse drawn forerunner of modern road grader. invention came @ time henry ford started mass-produce automobiles. before invention, wet country roads became muck , impassable. use of king road drag kept rural roads solid, when wet, made them passable time. these improved rural roads made possible both advent of automobile , rural mail delivery.


in first half of 20th century, maitland claimed have largest bluegrass seed producing farm in world. john q. weller claim 10,000,000 pounds (4,500,000 kg) of seed produced on farm more harvested seed output of entire state of kentucky. in years, weller permission pile bumper crops of seed on city streets. during harvest time in late june/early july, town hosted bluegrass festival.


bluegrass seed production in late 1950s/early 1960s moved farming communities in idaho, oregon, , washington. festival has been discontinued.


in 1975 maitland community betterment association celebrated bluegrass stripping heritage slogan, home of strippers.
