rock music, rapidly gained momentum during 1960s in communist romania, rather controversial topic, because of regime s propaganda against western culture. in 1971, fear culminated famous july theses. growing popularity, rock music regulated, allowed flourish in romania, triggering generation gap not dissimilar of west or other eastern european countries.

rock , roll didn t gain solid ground in romania until 1960s. during 1950s, art forms highly influenced proletkult. 1950s vogue in music latin jazz , tango. music thought of inventive, resembled kitsch.
little known beginning of rock music in romania; however, of earliest artists were: uranus (founded in 1961, in timişoara), cometele (english: comets, 1962, bucharest), sfinţii (english: saints, 1962, timişoara), entuziaştii (english: enthusiasts, 1963, bucharest). such bands survived couple of years (except sfinţii, later became transsylvania phoenix , still active), musicians carried on playing in other bands, become famous. rock trend started in romania young ones (1961), feature film starring singer cliff richard.
rock music seldom called name in romania (and in other east european countries); however, term beat used instead (this name of eps series, released in late 1960s). however, rock bands more referred electric guitar bands (ro. formaţii de chitare electrice). use of alternative names in 1960s not mean term rock banned or avoided, shows there different perspective on whole phenomenon.

all through 1960s, romanian rock bands permitted sing in english or other foreign languages; moreover, covers of western music requested electrecord (the state recording label), in order increase disc sales.
in 1971, president nicolae ceauşescu delivered so-called july theses of objectives demanded reorientation of cultural interests towards national values , treasures. in fact, july theses inaugurated mini cultural revolution ; romanian rock scene confronted many nascent issues had not faced before. singing in foreign languages restricted other romance languages, such french , italian, or fellow socialist bloc languages.
post-communist era
with disappearance of state censorship after romanian revolution, romanian rock scene saw period of diversification , liberalization. themes considered inappropriate authorities explored, , numerous new bands , artists came prominence.
music festivals such stufstock , peninsula / félsziget festival further helped popularization of romanian rock, including neighboring countries, such bulgaria , hungary.
in 2011, first edition of summer festival took place near bucharest, on Ştirbey domain, in buftea. festival, many indie, brit-pop or electro bands such wombats, interpol or chew lips promoted , shown romanian public.
