synopsis
prologue

prince karl franz heir (fictitious) german kingdom of karlsberg. has grown fatherless, under rather gloomy military conditions of castle life ( our bearing sedate ). has been educated tutors, in particular, kindly doctor engel, has taught him songs of alma mater, venerable university of heidelberg ( golden days ). karl franz has been promised in marriage, since childhood, princess margaret (johanna in versions), has never met her. grandfather, king ferdinand, sends him university incognito, live ordinary student, , improve social skills. karl franz sets off under watchful eye of doctor engel, accompanied snooty valet lutz, has own assistant, hubert.


act i

at heidelberg, herr ruder keeps rustic inn of 3 gold apples ( garlands bright ). beautiful niece kathie waits tables in inn s beer-garden. inn popular students, go there drink , sing ( drink! drink! drink! , inn re marching ). karl franz, finicky lutz , hubert arrive spring term , take rooms @ 3 gold apples, delight of engel , disgust of lutz ( in heidelberg fair , welcome prince ). falls in love, @ first sight, kathie, returns affection ( deep in heart, dear ). royal heir, , commoner.


karl franz makes friends 3 students, detlef, lucas , von asterberg, , shares camaraderie of student life, nights of enthusiastic drinking , singing ( overhead moon beaming ). joins student corps ( come sir, join our noble saxon corps? ).


act ii

as term passes, karl franz , friends continue enjoy student life ( farmer jacob lay-a-snoring , students life ). end of term, karl franz , kathie in love.


but karl franz receives surprise visit princess margaret , mother. bring news king ill , commands prince return home ceremony of betrothal princess. after leave, karl franz , kathie consider eloping paris. doctor engel , count von mark (the prime minister of karlsberg) remind prince of duty kingdom. karl franz reluctantly agrees obey king s command. promises kathie return ( farewell, dear ). takes leave of friends ( thoughts come me ), , students salute university ( gaudeamus igitur ).


act iii

back in karlsberg, 2 years pass, karl franz unable return heidelberg. grandfather has died, , karl franz king. life bound in court ceremony ( waltz ensemble ). princess margaret has had secret relationship man, captain tarnitz ( 2 ). king, karl franz must honor betrothal margaret ( gavotte ). margaret knows karl franz has long pined old love, , has heard rumors in heidelberg, fell in love tavernkeeper s niece.


word arrives heidelberg doctor engel has died there. karl franz persuaded visit heidelberg brief reunion old friends, , hopes see kathie again ( memories ).


act iv

princess margaret goes heidelberg first, , secretly visits kathie. margaret persuades of kingdom, must break off karl franz. agree kathie tell karl franz in love man , going marry him. karl franz free accept margaret, has come love him. meanwhile, students of heidelberg continue merry ways ( sing little song , inn re marching (reprise) , overhead moon beaming (reprise) , come boys, let s gay boys ).


karl franz arrives, meets old friends , visits kathie. true promise, tells him of fictitious new love , plans marry. karl franz resolves marry margaret without further delay, kathie true love ( deep in heart dear (reprise) ).
