after occupation of parts of palatinate on left bank of rhine french revolutionary troops in 1794, in 1801 treaty of lunéville awarded ruined castle french; in 1804 offered sale. in 1815 congress of vienna resulted in passing possession of kingdom of prussia. in 1828 crown prince frederick william acquired in order give wife elisabeth ludovika of bavaria; wittelsbach princess. in association visit in 1850s, large parts of toppling walls cleared, , rubble spread on courtyard , used fill moat. remained wall of palas on courtyard side, ring wall on steeg valley side height of chemin de ronde , small piece of inner or shield wall.


the ruined castle became known among romantics , nationalists , depicted in 19th century. beginning in 1907, axel delmar had plans home artists in ruins of castle, prussian royal family refused sell site.
