the first nationwide digital tv service launched in december 1998 sky tv, had monopoly on digital satellite tv until launch of freeview s nationwide digital satellite service in may 2007. freeview terrestrial service, named freeview|hd high definition digital terrestrial television service launched on 14 april 2008. service serves areas surrounding auckland, hamilton, tauranga, napier-hastings, palmerston north, wellington, christchurch, , dunedin. digital cable television operates in wellington , christchurch on telstraclear s cable tv system. high definition programming available freeview on terrestrial broadcast , on sky tv through sky hdi decoder. limited range of channels available in high definition.
