the copacabana opened in november 10, 1940, @ 10 east 60th street in new york city. although monte proser s name on lease, had powerful partner: mob boss frank costello. proser (1904–1973), native englishman, well-connected nightclub owner , press agent various clients included walt disney, maria montez, mary pickford, , ziegfeld follies. costello put jules podell on scene after interests; podell had police record , not have been acceptable front man business, , indeed, club faced tax problems , racketeering investigation in 1944. however, 1948, such pressure had lessened; proser out, , podell official owner.


the copacabana had brazilian decor , latin-themed orchestras, while menu featured chinese food. club known chorus line, copacabana girls ,


podell had strict no blacks policy. in 1944 harry belafonte, member of u.s. navy, denied entry date. podell persuaded change policy, , belafonte returned in 1950s headliner @ club. sammy davis jr. shattered attendance records run in may 1964, , sam cooke performed there on july 8, 1964, resulting in lp sam cooke @ copa. in july 1965 supremes made debut there, resulting in motown records booking temptations, martha , vandellas, , marvin gaye perform @ copa on next few years. supremes recorded live album there in 1965 missed top 10, peaking @ #11. marvin gaye recorded live album, did temptations. supremes, proved successful of motown acts, released supremes: live @ copa expanded edition in 2012, featuring much-sought-after original repertoire.


dean martin , jerry lewis frequent performers @ club , performed last show there on july 25, 1956, can seen in tv movie martin , lewis (2002).


this nightclub achieved degree of notoriety due may 16, 1957, incident involving members of new york yankees. on evening, teammates mickey mantle, whitey ford, hank bauer, yogi berra, johnny kucks, , billy martin, along wives of martin, arrived @ nightclub celebrate martin s birthday. sammy davis, jr. happened headliner. during performance, group of apparently intoxicated bowlers started interfere davis act, hurling racial slurs @ him. behavior incensed yankees, martin, since teammate elston howard, first black player join yankees. tensions erupted between 2 factions, , resulting fracas made newspaper headlines. several of yankees fined. 1 of bowlers, bronx deli owner, ended concussion , broken jaw, , sued bauer aggravated assault; case thrown out insufficient evidence. martin later traded yankees kansas city athletics, incident cited main cause.


until 1972, mafioso joe gallo operated venue. closed 3 years in 1973 after jules podell died; when reopened in 1976, @ height of disco era, operate discothèque.


in 1992, then-owner peter dorn moved club original location of on 50 years 617 west 57th street. dorn charged landlord nicola biase not liking hispanics , stated reason move.


in 2001, club forced move third time w. 34th street , eleventh avenue on west side of manhattan, when landlord terminated lease build office towers on site. since has presented hip-hop , salsa acts.


on january 20, 2007, club announced have move july 1 because current location condemned due construction of extension of irt flushing line 7 (new york city subway service) of new york city subway, construction of now-cancelled world product center. june 30 of same year last night club open, el gran combo performing there.


from late 2007 until club reopened in 2011, club sharing space columbus 72 nightclub, shares same owners.


in april 2010, club owners approved liquor license operate club in new location @ 760-766 8th avenue, on second , third floors. in november 2010, club owners granted permission alter method of operation on second floor permit dancing restaurant patrons general public, not limited private parties , catered events.


on july 12, 2011, club re-opened public in times square @ 268 west 47th street. first performer @ new location world-renowned salsa musician willie colón.
