the copacabana opened in november 10, 1940, @ 10 east 60th street in new york city. although monte proser s name on lease, had powerful partner: mob boss frank costello. proser (1904–1973), native englishman, well-connected nightclub owner , press agent various clients included walt disney, maria montez, mary pickford, , ziegfeld follies. costello put jules podell on scene after interests; podell had police record , not have been acceptable front man business, , indeed, club faced tax problems , racketeering investigation in 1944. however, 1948, such pressure had lessened; proser out, , podell official owner.

in 1992, then-owner peter dorn moved club original location of on 50 years 617 west 57th street. dorn charged landlord nicola biase not liking hispanics , stated reason move.
in 2001, club forced move third time w. 34th street , eleventh avenue on west side of manhattan, when landlord terminated lease build office towers on site. since has presented hip-hop , salsa acts.
on january 20, 2007, club announced have move july 1 because current location condemned due construction of extension of irt flushing line 7 (new york city subway service) of new york city subway, construction of now-cancelled world product center. june 30 of same year last night club open, el gran combo performing there.
