early

in 711 ce, arab general muhammad bin qasim conquered sindh, bringing south asian societies contact islam. raja dahir hindu king ruled on buddhist majority , chach of alor , kin regarded usurpers of earlier buddhist rai dynasty. view questioned note diffuse , blurred nature of hindu , buddhist practices in region, of royalty patrons of both , believe chach himself may have been buddhist. forces of muhammad bin qasim defeated raja dahir.

founding

mian ghulam shah kalhoro of kalhora dynasty founded city in 1768 on ruins of neroon kot (nerun or nerun kot meaning place of neroon), small fishing village on banks of indus river named after ruler neroon. formal concept city laid out son, sarfraz khan in 1782. when foundations laid, city obtained nickname heart of mehran ruler mian ghulam shah himself said have fallen in love city. in 1768 ordered fort built on 1 of 3 hills of hyderabad house , defend people. fort built using fire-baked bricks, on account of named pacco qillo (sindhi: پڪو قلعو) meaning strong fort.


the city has history of sufism. in 18th century syeds multan migrated , settled @ tando jahania making sacred place muslims. these syeds came here uch sharif (bahawalpur district) via jahanian (khanewal district 42 km multan). these descendants of jahaniyan jahangasht noted sufi saint.
