culture , traditions
school traditions include hall fight , singing of brevitate vitae. 6 dances held every year, including costume-ball , freshman-ball. many clubs have been founded in mr, these include: art club (with 5 divisions for: visual art, music, dancing, literature , films), herranótt acting guild (the oldest theatric club in northern europe), computer academy , nerd club (which merged , became known academy), traveller s club, sport s club, riding club, science club, novelist club, chess club , rowing club (which historically club rowing, male/female-cheerleading team).
the hall fight
every year @ end of spring semester students of mr organize fight in halls of main building. bell placed on ground floor of building , seniors aim reach bell , ring while other students try fight them , prevent them doing so. should seniors succeed in task, younger students attend next class. during fight, or senior students covered in dirt. event cancelled permanently after 2008-2009 inspector platearum (a senior student responsible ringing school bells , furthermore leader of seniors in hall fight) broke neck in fight, resulting in 9 million isk lawsuit.
the freshmen day
one day in first weeks of school special day newcomers (icelandic: busadagur), day held in junior colleges in country , not tradition of menntaskólinn í reykjavík, although traditions regarding day vary between schools. day starts seniors dressing in white toga cloaks , painting faces. seniors march around school , gather newcomers out school grounds thrown high air. tradition of throwing newcomers air old - part of dressing in toga added seniors in 1991 (graduating in 1992). on day (and next few days after) students tend sing song de brevitate vitae. following night freshmen ball held.
the violin dance (fiðluballið)
the violin dance many described fancy promenade ball live violin music played , students wear best garments while dancing elegantly. tradition started in 1960s , meant iconoclasm hippie culture @ time. reverend geir waage rumored have been originator of dance. held once, although in 1992 resurrected dagur b. eggertsson, inspector scholae. annual event graduating students.

skólablaðið skinfaxi - articles past year; published annually. contains 2 publications, skólablaðið , skinfaxi, respectably, have been published jointly since 2009. skinfaxi first published in 1898 , skólablaðið in 1925.
loki laufeyjarson - similar publication menntaskólatíðindi, published framtíðin, student body.
menntaskólatíðindi - newspaper daily life , events in school; published once every month new student body skólafélagið.
de rerum natura - scientific magazine published science club every year. named after lucretius de rerum natura. first published in 1960, under presidency of Ólafur ragnar grímsson, later became president of iceland.
yggdrasill & novelist news - 2 magazines published novelist club every year.
vetur - annual photographic newspaper pictures of stundents, daily life , social life in mr.
businn - monthly newspaper freshmen, written juniors juniors.
idus martii - annual magazine history, ancient languages , classics. published 3rd year students of classical language department on ides of march.
morkinskinna - published annually in beginning of autumn. handbook containing information school , students , study diary. named after morkinskinna.
debating
framtíðin, oldest student body in iceland, member of mælsku- og rökræðukeppni framhaldsskóla á Íslandi (morfÍs, icelandic junior college debating society), holds annual debating competition between icelandic junior colleges. since foundation in 1983, mr has won finals 8 times. students of mr regularly hold debating competitions among themselves. these competitions held , lot of traditions have evolved around them. framtíðin administers debating society mr students , 1 of oldest clubs in iceland (founded in 1883). sólbjartur annual debating competition in each class of mr free send 1 or more teams debate. winning team receives title sólbjartur (literally: sun-bright) , best debater of winning team receives title orator scholae (latin: spokesman of school). annual competition held, called orator minor (latin: next-best spokesman). orator minor competition people debate randomly selected subjects in one-on-one battles , have ten minutes prepare speeches. however, orator minor, year 2007, held more once every year, 5 times.
quizzing
mr renowned excellent results in gettu betur, annual quiz show gymnasiums on icelandic national television. mr has won quiz show 20 times out of 30, including eleven-times winning streak 1993-2003. mr s last victory in 2016. annual quiz competition held, each class sends in 1 or more teams compete against others. competition called ratatoskur , named after famous squirrel nordic mythology.
mr-ví
one day in october each year, students of mr , rival school, verzlunarskóli Íslands (commercial college of iceland), meet in hljómskálagarður park, located in downtown reykjavík, various games , competitions held. these include: sprinting, soccer, rowing, giant-chess (later replaced ordinary chess), screaming, tug-o-war, competitive eating, arm wrestling, car stuffing , infamous mexican-run. night of day, debating competition between 2 schools held.
