haxted watermill stands in surrey, close border kent. domesday site , mill mentioned in of sir reginald de cobham in 1361. western half of building dates c.1580 , eastern half dates 1794. mill last used grind flour in 1919 worked until 1945. turned museum in 1969 brasserie , bar.


the current overshot waterwheel has diameter of 10 feet (3.05 m) , width of 9 feet (2.74 m). installed in 1830, 1972 72 iron buckets had failed , replaced fibreglass replicas. bearing-stone earlier, undershot waterwheel found during renovation , dates fourteenth century. in full working order current wheel produced 11 horsepower (8.2 kw), rotating @ 8 r.p.m. , driving 3 pairs of millstones, through gearing, @ 120 r.p.m. pit wheel , wallower of same date waterwheel, great spur wheel, made of oak applewood teeth, has been dated 1580. mill operated 3 pairs of millstones, in later years of working life 1 pair removed.
