horan enjoyed success st. rynagh s in club career spanned 3 decades.

in 1968 out of minor grade when won first championship medal in senior grade. 1–12 3–4 defeat of coolderry first of 3 championship titles in succession st. rynagh s. in 1970 horan added leinster medal collection following 4–10 2–9 defeat of rathnure. st. rynagh s later faced roscrea in inaugural all-ireland final, however, horan s side defeated 4–5 2–5.

four county championships-in-a-row proved beyond st. rynagh s, however, club bounced in 1972. defeat of kinnitty in county decider kick-started remarkable run of success yielded record-breaking 5 championships in succession. horan collected second leinster medal in 1972 st. rynagh s narrowly defeated old rivals rathnure 5–5 2–13.

after number of years out of spotlight, st. rynagh s returned top table once again in 1981. defeat of kinnitty gave horan ninth championship medal.

st. rynagh s retained title in 1982 horan securing remarkable tenth championship medal. later won third leinster medal st. rynagh s narrolwy defeated buffer s alley 1–16 2–10.

horan finished off club hurling career in 1987 when captured eleventh championship medal following defeat of seir kieran.

inter-county

horan first came prominence on inter-county scene dual player offaly minor , under-21 teams.

he made senior debut in national hurling league game against kilkenny in 1969. following year made first championship appearance in provincial quarter-final against laois.

in 1980 offaly emerged doldrums qualify second provincial decider in fifty years. reigning all-ireland champions provided opposition, however, remarkable 3–17 5–10 victory gave horan first leinster medal. victory tinged sadness horan father died @ home while listening match on radio. offaly s dream season came end defeat eventual champions galway in all-ireland semi-final.

offaly proved success more flash in pan reaching provincial final again in 1981. horan captain year offaly defeated wexford 3–12 2–13. horan s second leinster medal. win allowed offaly advance first all-ireland final reigning champions galway. after fourteen minutes pat carroll scored opening goal of game offaly, however, neither side built strong lead. straight after interval goalkeeper damien martin doing great work when batted out galway goal. on twenty minutes left in game galway led 6 points, however, team failed score rest of match. offaly, on other hand, ate lead. johnny flaherty s controversial hand-passed goal 3 minutes deciding score of game. @ full-time whistle offaly winners 2–12 0–15. first all-ireland medal horan while had honour of lifting liam maccarthy cup.

after suffering back-to-back leinster final defeats kilkenny, offaly triumphed once again in 1984. 1–15 2–11 defeat of wexford gave horan third leinster medal. offaly subsequently advanced centenary all-ireland final @ semple stadium in thurles. on day, however, cork far strong horan s team. although far being classic game offaly defeated 3–16 1–12.

offaly retained leinster title in 1985 horan adding fourth provincial memento collection following 5–15 0–17 trouncing of laois. galway provided opposition in subsequent all-ireland final , tense game ensued. once again offaly s goal-scoring ability proved crucial. pat cleary scored first of day after twenty-five minutes of play , got second less half minute after restart. joe dooley had goal disallowed halfway through second-half while long joe cooney effort, seemed cross goal line, not given. p.j. molloy galway s goal scorer, however, day belonged offaly. 2–11 1–12 victory gave horan second all-ireland medal.

horan retired inter-county hurling following offaly s exit provincial championship in 1986.

in 1973 @ full-back leinster qualified final. 1–13 2–8 defeat of arch-rivals munster gave horan railway cup medal. first of 3 successive final victories on munster, horan playing key role in of finals.
