the eastern segment of kremlin wall, , red square behind it, emerged on present site in 15th century, during reign of ivan iii; wall , square separated wide defensive moat filled water diverted neglinnaya river. moat lined secondary fortress wall, , spanned 3 bridges connecting kremlin posad. 1707–1708 peter great, expecting swedish incursion deep russian mainland, restored moat around kremlin, cleared red square , built earthen fortifications around nikolskaya , spasskaya towers. 1776–1787 matvey kazakov built kremlin senate today provides backdrop present-day necropolis.


throughout 18th century unused, neglected fortifications deteriorated , not repaired until 1801 coronation of alexander i. in 1 season moat bridges , adjacent buildings replaced clean span of paved square. more reconstruction followed in 19th century. stretch of kremlin wall south senate tower badly damaged in 1812 explosion @ kremlin arsenal set off retreating french troops. nikolskaya tower lost gothic crown erected in 1807–1808; arsenalnaya tower developed deep cracks, leading joseph bove proposing in 1813 outright demolition of towers prevent imminent collapse. eventually, main structures of towers deemed sound enough left in place, , topped new tented roofs designed bove. peter s bastions razed (creating space nearby alexander garden , theatre square), kremlin wall facing red square rebuilt shallower before, , acquired present shape in 1820s.
