nelson s league campaign started on 26 august 1922 away fixture @ bradford park avenue, had been relegated football league second division in previous season. in highest scoring match of day, nelson lost match 2–6 before crowd of 10,000 witnessed joe eddleston score first goal of season. bradford park avenue again opponents following week nelson s first home game of campaign , match won 1–0 host side courtesy of mike mcculloch goal. eddleston s second goal of campaign secured 1–0 victory, time against stalybridge celtic, @ seedhill on 9 september 1922 send team seventh in table after 3 matches. third successive home fixture saw nelson win 2–0 against halifax town 2 goals eddleston. nelson not follow earlier victory on stalybridge celtic, falling 0–2 loss before attaining fourth win of campaign against southport week later. win against southport, nelson s fourth since joining league in 1921, meant september ended had started 1–0 win marked nelson s fifth victory , clean sheet of month.

in spite of suffering second defeat of november, nelson remained top of league going december. first fixture of month home match against mid-table darlington on 9 december. nelson won close match 3–2 braidwood strike, followed eddleston s 10th , 11th goals of campaign. hat-trick inside-forward wolstenholme gave nelson 3–0 victory against same team on 23 december in front of season-low attendance of 3,000 @ seedhill. nelson started christmas period away game against halifax town. braidwood , wolstenholme both got on scoresheet team 2–2 draw in front of 18,000 supporters @ shay. on 26 december, nelson faced hartlepools united, whom had conceded 10 goals in 2 matches in previous season. wolstenholme netted third game in succession nelson claimed first ever win against club. however, in first match of 1923, hartlepools united won return fixture 5–1. nelson achieved first win of new year on 13 january, 3–0 triumph against rochdale courtesy of eddleston hat-trick. nelson lost 0–1 lincoln city following week, first time had failed score in league fixture on 2 months. january came conclusion 2–1 win on same team, goals eddleston , mcculloch giving nelson victory.

nelson attained first ever win against durham city on 3 february 1923, , followed 4–0 win on same side. win saw sid hoad , bob hutchinson each net first of campaign, , striker eddleston increase tally season 19. goal black not enough prevent nelson s winning streak come end on 17 february 1–3 defeat away @ wigan borough. nelson made loss following week, exacting 1–0 win on wigan, new signing dick crawshaw scoring on nelson debut. @ beginning of march, nelson achieved back-to-back victories against chesterfield, second 4–0 win saw second goal in 3 games crawshaw , 2 goals utility man black, playing in unfamiliar centre-forward role. nelson took 1 point next 2 matches against crewe alexandra. team failed score in both games, time in season did in successive matches. entering easter period, eddleston s 20th league goal of campaign earned nelson 1–1 draw grimsby town @ seedhill on 31 march.


nelson s winless streak extended 4 games when lost 1–2 away wrexham @ start of april, although crawshaw continued vein of goalscoring form, netting third in 7 games. wolstenholme , braidwood scored give nelson 2–0 win on grimsby on 7 april, before beating local rivals accrington stanley 2–1 @ seedhill. after win against accrington following weekend, nelson went home match against wrexham on 24 april requiring win secure third division north championship. several mill-owners in town closed factories supporters attend match on time. on 12,000 spectators attended seedhill , saw nelson achieve 2–0 victory first-half strikes crawshaw , eddleston. player-manager david wilson claimed happiest man in nelson side gained promotion second division first time in history. win followed team procession around town, , celebrations continued next match team claimed third consecutive clean sheet 3–0 win @ home walsall. however, season ended disappointingly nelson suffered heaviest defeat of season, 0–5 loss walsall, on 5 may 1923.
