the design of etchmiadzin cathedral—classified four-apsed square ciborium, , called Էջմիածնատիպ ejmiatsnatip etchmiadzin-type in armenian architectural historiography—was not common in armenia in medieval period. now-destroyed st. theodore church of bagaran, dating 624 631, known church similar plan , structure period. in 19th century, during architectural revival looked armenia s past, plan of etchmiadzin cathedral began directly copied in new armenian churches. notable examples period include narthex of st. thaddeus monastery in northern iran, dating 1811 or 1819–30, , ghazanchetsots cathedral in shusha, dating 1868.


on european architecture

art historian josef strzygowski, first european thoroughly study armenian architecture, , placed armenia in center of european architecture, suggested several churches , chapels in western europe have been influenced cathedrals of etchmiadzin , bagaran due similarities found within plans. according strzygowski, examples of churches influenced etchmiadzin , bagaran 9th-century church of germigny-des-prés in france (built odo of metz, armenian) , san satiro of milan, italy. view later supported alexander sahinian , varazdat harutyunyan. sahinian suggested armenian church architecture spread in western europe in 8th–9th centuries paulicians, migrated armenia en mase after being suppressed byzantine government during iconoclasm period. sahinian added many other medieval churches in europe, such palatine chapel of aachen in germany, list of churches have been influenced cathedrals of etchmiadzin , bagaran , byzantine decorative arts. according murad hasratyan, etchmiadzin s design spread europe via byzantine empire , served model—besides germigny-des-prés , san satiro—for nea ekklesia church in constantinople , churches of mount athos in greece.
