born in edinburgh, scotland, son of craufurd tait (1777-1832) , susan née campbell (1777-1814) tait educated @ royal high school , @ edinburgh academy, twice elected dux. parents presbyterians turned towards scottish episcopal church. confirmed in first year @ oxford, having entered balliol college in october 1830 snell exhibitioner university of glasgow. won open scholarship, took degree first-class in literis humanioribus in 1833 , became fellow , tutor of balliol. ordained deacon in 1836 , priest in 1838 , served curacy @ baldon.


rapid changes among fellows found him, @ age 26, senior , responsible of 4 balliol tutors. experience gained during period stood him in stead afterwards member of first oxford university commission (1850–52). never sympathised principles of oxford movement and, on appearance of tract xc in 1841, drafted famous protest of 4 tutors against it; important contribution controversy. on other hand, although sympathies on whole liberal movement in university, never took lead in matter.


in 1842, became undistinguished useful successor arnold headmaster of rugby school (one of pupils lewis carroll); , serious illness in 1848, first of many, led him welcome comparative leisure followed upon appointment deanery of carlisle in 1849. life there, however, 1 of no little activity; served on university commission, restored cathedral, , did excellent pastoral work. there, too, suffered great sorrow of life. had married catharine spooner @ rugby in 1843. in 1856, within 5 weeks, 5 of children died due virulent scarlet fever.


not long afterwards, consecrated bishop of london on 22 november 1856, successor charles james blomfield. translation canterbury in 1868 (he had refused archbishopric of york in 1862) constituted recognition of work made no break in it. last years interrupted illness , saddened death in 1878 of son, craufurd (1848-1878), , of wife, catharine née spooner (1819-1878).
