after graduating dodd continued @ royal veterinary college demonstrator of pathology , assistant john mcfadyean, professor of pathology , bacteriology , leading veterinary scientist. post provided dodd experience in veterinary research , vaccine preparation. throughout career dodd publish many of scientific papers in quarterly started , edited mcfadyean, journal of comparative pathology , therapeutics issn 0368-1742.

the queensland government engaged dodd in 1907 principal veterinary surgeon , bacteriologist, following cattle tick conference in may of year. instructed queensland government, dodd visited north america on-route australia investigate bovine tick fever in united states , canada (also known redwater or texas fever: see babesiosis, anaplasmosis).


in queensland dodd proposed experimental farm livestock disease established stock experiment station in 1909 @ yeerongpilly, brisbane, later become animal research institute. research @ time included first detection in australia of species of theileria in cattle, parasitic protozoan, published in 1910 piroplasmosis of cattle in queensland.


dodd resigned queensland department of agriculture , stock in april 1910, dissatisfied after seeking clarification of duties.

in 1911 dodd appointed first lecturer in veterinary bacteriology @ university of sydney. lectured in veterinary pathology , honorary lecturer in preventive medicine @ university, remained until death in 1926.


along teaching, dodd continued perform valuable research. work on black disease in sheep found association between causal bacterium , liver fluke, etiology of black disease: being further studies in braxy-like disease of sheep (1921).
