american broadcasting-paramount theatres formed records division in 1955 samuel h. clark first president. division incorporated on 000000001955-06-14-0000june 14, 1955 am-par record corporation.


in addition producing records, abc licensed masters independent record producers, , purchased regionally released records national distribution. am-par record corporation changed abc-paramount records, inc. on 000000001961-12-07-0000december 7, 1961.


in 1965, clark promoted vice-president in charge of ab-pt s non-broadcast operations. national sales manager larry newton named abc-paramount president.in april 1966, dunhill records purchased under newton.


abc records

the label renamed abc records in june 1966. in 1970, abc , dunhill moved headquarters los angeles. newton promoted vice-president in charge of abc pictures. dunhill co-owner jay lasker named president , referred combined operations abc/dunhill. @ time abc had 5 labels: westminster, command, probe, impulse, , bluesway.


by may 1972, abc formed abc leisure group, included abc records, anchor records, , abc records , tape sales, plus new retail record-store division. lasker left abc join ariola america records in 1975. succeeded jerry rubinstein, served company head until 1977. in november 1972, abc bought country music company cartwheel records.


in 1974, abc switched british distribution emi emi-distributed anchor records, allowing abc recordings issued on abc label in uk, , anchor records distributed abc on anchor label in us.


as cost-cutting measure, abc records discarded many master tapes in 1970s save storage space. when these recordings reissued on compact disc in 1980s, cd versions taken master copies had less optimal sound quality. company s last president, steve diener, named president in 1977 after serving head of abc records international division. because of financial problems, abc records sold on january 31, 1979 mca records, discontinued abc label on march 5, 1979. bestselling albums in abc catalog reissued on mca.
