mount saint benedict abbey, known abbey of our lady of exile benedictine monastery following order of saint benedict. monastery located in northwestern town of st. augustine in tunapuna-piarco in trinidad , tobago.



the benedictine order founded saint benedict of nursia wrote rule of saint benedict followed benedictines. motto of order ora et labor, pray , work. benedict, born in 480 in nursia, italy, sent family rome study law. revolted immoral atmosphere of city, decided become hermit, spending days in seclusion , prayer. eventually, benedict gained following , established benedictine order.


history

mount saint benedict abbey established in 1912 on 240 acres of land approximately 700 feet above sea level, purchased dom mayeul de caigny, brazilian benedictine monk trinidadian andrew gomez. june 27, 1912, land officially benedictine property.


the archbishop of port of spain took offence dom mayeul , companions referring trinidad missionary territory. don mayeul told there on 100,000 hindus in trinidad , hoped focus efforts on evangelizing these groups. trinidad however, converted catholicism following discovery christopher columbus in 1500s.


on 6 october 1912, 3 monks arrived in trinidad establish abbey: dom ambrose, dom paul , dom mayeul. monks welcomed nearby parish of arouca , housed there until receiving more monks begin construction of property. on november 27, 1912, 2 more religious brothers received: brother joseph kleinmann , brother donatian marcus. brother kleinmann, carpenter, began convert small hut existing on property 2 rooms, oratory, , dormitory. brother kleinmann went on work on challenge of bringing fresh water monastery. laying down thousands of feet of pipe, brother able bring water @ rate of 5 gallons per minutes crown lands ravine monastery. soon, trinidadian people began give brothers furniture, cooking utensils, chickens, eggs, rice, , coffee.


on july 24, 1913, contractor, a.d degazon hired construct road provide safe path bottom of hill building site. mayeul responsible purchasing several pieces of equipment monks such automated machines cut , prepare wood , “a motor- driven unit generate electricity.” religious brothers able create choir stall, flooring, , roofs many of buildings. chapel structure stood @ 68 21 feet, first mass being celebrated on august 10, 1913.

today, tower , red roofs, abbey consists of church, monastery, seminary, drug rehabilitation center, yogurt factory, , pax guest house place retreat. abbey welcomes , draws people of faiths seeking peace, solace, purpose, , fulfillment. mount saint benedict presided on abbot john pereira , houses ten monks.


the pax house

pax means peace in latin. pax house guest house built in 1916 on grounds of mount saint benedict. features views of rising northern range north , low lying caroni plains of central trinidad south. house offers general tours of grounds , guided bird watching tours. house notable famous tea room built during world war ii , oldest in country. operates few hours each afternoon serving variety of international teas , items produced on premises such honey , bread.

yogurt has been monks @ mount saint benedict since 1997 way have healthier diet. monk started make yogurt began give out visitors , friends became trend. people started place orders , monks realized had think of way make more yogurt increased number of people enjoyed eating it. pax yogurt company started in april 2003 , ships products, in variety of flavors, supermarkets across country. hotels, german guests, interested in getting yogurt deliveries.
