johanna van gogh-bonger (1925) isaac israƫls
upon vincent van gogh s death in 1890, work not sold fell possession of brother theo. theo died 6 months after vincent, leaving work in possession of widow, johanna van gogh-bonger. selling many of vincent s paintings ambition of spreading knowledge of artwork, johanna maintained private collection of works.
the collection inherited son vincent willem van gogh in 1925, loaned stedelijk museum in amsterdam displayed many years, , transferred state-initiated vincent van gogh foundation in 1962.

design van gogh museum commissioned dutch government in 1963 dutch architect , furniture designer gerrit rietveld. rietveld died year later, , building not completed until 1973, when museum opened doors.
in 1998 , 1999, building renovated dutch architect martien van goor , exhibition wing japanese modernist architect kisho kurokawa added.
starting in late 2012, museum closed renovations 6 months. during period, 75 works collection shown in hermitage amsterdam.
on 9 september 2013, museum unveiled long-lost van gogh painting spent years in norwegian attic believed painter. first full-size canvas him discovered since 1928. sunset @ montmajour depicts trees, bushes , sky, painted van gogh s familiar thick brush strokes. can dated exact day painted because described in letter brother, theo, , said painted previous day 4 july 1888.
art thefts
in 1991, twenty paintings stolen museum, among them van gogh s painting potato eaters. although thieves escaped building, 35 minutes later stolen paintings recovered abandoned car. 3 paintings – wheatfield crows, still life bible, , still life fruit – severely torn during theft. 4 men, including 2 museum guards, convicted theft , given 6 or seven-year sentences. considered largest art theft in netherlands since second world war.
in 2002, 2 paintings stolen museum, congregation leaving reformed church in nuenen , view of sea @ scheveningen. 2 dutchmen convicted theft four-and-a-half-year sentences, paintings not recovered. museum offered reward of €100,000 information leading recovery of paintings. fbi art crime team listed robbery on top ten art crimes list, , estimates combined value of paintings @ us$30 million. in september 2016, both paintings discovered guardia di finanza in naples, italy. 2 artworks found in relatively state , according van gogh museum.
