tales of suspense , sister publication tales astonish both launched january 1959 cover date. published under atlas comics, 1950s forerunner of marvel, fell under marvel banner issue #19 (july 1961), first cover sporting mc box. contained science-fiction mystery/suspense stories written editor-in-chief stan lee , brother, larry lieber, artists including jack kirby, steve ditko, , don heck. issue #9 (may 1960) introduced chondu mystic anthological-story character; reintroduced supervillain in 1970s.
iron man , watcher
issue #39 (march 1963) introduced superhero iron man, created editor , plotter lee, scripter lieber, , artists heck , jack kirby. starred in 13-page 18-page adventures, rest of tales of suspense devoted anthological science fiction , fantasy stories comic ran.
after debuting bulky gray armor, iron man redesigned similar golden armor in second story (issue #40, april 1963). first iteration of modern, sleek red-and-golden armor appeared in #48 (dec. 1963), drawn ditko (though whether or kirby, singly or in collaboration, designed it, uncertain). #53-58 (may-oct. 1964), cover logo tales of suspense featuring power of iron man . 2 months before debut of sorcerer-hero doctor strange, lee, kirby , scripter robert bernstein, under pseudonym r. berns , introduced same-name criminal scientist , ph.d., carl strange. making sole appearance in iron man story stronghold of dr. strange in tales of suspense #41 (may 1963), character gained mental powers in freak lightning strike. mandarin debuted in issue #50 (feb. 1964) , become 1 of iron man s major enemies. black widow first appeared in #52 (april 1964) , hawkeye followed 5 issues later.

beginning issue #59 (nov. 1964), iron man began sharing split book captain america, had guest-starred in iron man feature previous issue. jack kirby, captain america s co-creator during 1940s golden age of comic books, had drawn character part of superhero team avengers earlier year, , illustrating hero s solo adventures first time since 1941. issue #63 (march 1965), in editor-scripter stan lee retold captain america s origin, through #71 (nov. 1965) featured period stories set during world war ii, , co-starred captain america s golden age sidekick, james buchanan barnes aka bucky. sharon carter introduced in issue #75 (march 1966) , later became love interest captain america. red skull, captain america s major nemesis in world war ii era, revived in present day in issue #79 (july 1966). modok first appeared in #94 (oct. 1967).
kirby drew 2 stories, gil kane , john romita sr. each filled-in. several stories finished penciler-inker george tuska on kirby layouts, 1 finished romita sr. , penciler dick ayers , inker john tartaglione. kirby s regular inkers on series frank giacoia (as frank ray ) , joe sinnott, though don heck , golden age captain america artist syd shores inked 1 story each.
tales of suspense became captain america #100 (april 1968). iron man went on appear in one-shot iron man , sub-mariner #1 (april 1968), , debuted in own title iron man #1 (may 1968).
