at first race of 2013–2014 world cup in shanghai, shim won both 1000 metres , 1500 metres. shim won gold in 1000 metres , silver in 1500 metres @ second race in seoul, south korea. wins on home soil began garner considerable media attention , put national spotlight. @ third race of 2013–2014 world cup in turin, shim won both 1000 metres , 1500 metres again. after winning gold in 1500 metres , bronze in 500 metres @ last race in kolomna, shim clinched second straight overall world cup title. became 1000 metres , 1500 metres champion 2013–14 world cup season.

shim suk-hee in 1000 m @ 2014 winter olympics
shim went first winter olympics in sochi declared aim of winning multiple gold medals. on 13 february 2014, first competed in 500 metres surprisingly failed advance out of quarterfinals placing fourth in heat.
two days later, shim won silver in 1500 metres. shim started 1500 m final race @ of pack. first made move 10 laps go, charging out first place arianna fontana right behind her. after kim a-lang , li jianrou got tangled midway through, shim comfortably in lead. shim stayed in first place until final stretch, zhou yang, reigning olympic 1500 m champion, zipped past shim 2 laps go , didn t relinquish lead.
on 18 february, shim claimed gold in 3000 metre relay part of south korean relay team. 3 laps go in final race, south korea trailed china substantial margin , seemed headed toward inevitable second place. however, 17-year-old anchor relay team reached deep , conjured every bit of energy in lithe. zipped past li jianrou on outer side of track in final lap, daring move stunned chinese in nail-biting finish.
on 21 february, shim won bronze medal in 1000 metres total time of 1:31.027, 0.266 seconds behind winner park seung-hi , 0.216 seconds behind runner-up fan kexin.
world championships
from march 14–16, 2014, shim competed @ 2014 world championships held in montreal, quebec, canada, winning first overall title 102 points, placing first place in 1000 metres, 1500 metres , 3000 metres. defeated south korean park seung-hi, silver medalist , canadian valérie maltais finished third in points.
