The formation of the Geochron Lead–lead dating

samples of iron meteorite canyon diablo (meteor crater) arizona found have least radiogenic composition of material in solar system. u/pb ratio low no radiogenic decay detected in isotopic composition. illustrated in figure 1, point defines lower (left) end of isochron. therefore, troilite found in canyon diablo represents primeval lead isotope composition of solar system, dating 4.55 +/- 0.07 byr.

stony meteorites however, exhibited high pb/pb versus pb/pb ratios, indicating these samples came crust or mantle of planetesimal. together, these samples define isochron, slope gives age of meteorites 4.55 byr.

patterson analyzed terrestrial sediment collected ocean floor, believed representative of bulk earth composition. because isotope composition of sample plotted on meteorite isochron, suggested earth had same age , origin meteorites, therefore solving age of earth , giving rise name geochron .

lead isotope isochron diagram used c. c. patterson determine age of earth in 1956. animation shows progressive growth on 4550 million years (myr) of lead isotope ratios 2 stony meteorites (nuevo laredo , forest city) initial lead isotope ratios matching of canyon diablo iron meteorite.
