the origin of songkok can traced fez, adopted ottomans in 1826 , subsequently spread south asia, introduced malay archipelago (which parts of indonesia, malaysia , brunei). songkok used worn during ottoman empire , in parts of africa. 1 brunei newspaper account erroneously states songkok became norm in malay archipelago in 13th century coming of islam in region. earliest written mention of word songkok in syair siti zubaidah (1840). while traditional triangular malay headress of tengkolok or destar associated traditional malay nobles , royalties, songkok on other hand has become part of traditional malay men s costume associated islam, traditionally worn local ulamas.


the malay regiment have been using songkok part of uniform since under british rule.
