inter-county
o sullivan first came prominence on inter-county scene member of tipperary minor hurling team in 1960s. won munster title in grade in 1961, following 7-11 1-6 trouncing of fierce rivals cork. tipp subsequently lined out against kilkenny in all-ireland minor decider. high-scoring game developed on hour, however, o sullivan let in 3 goals , kilkenny emerged victorious 3-13 0-15.
o sullivan later joined county under-21 team. here won munster title in inaugural year of competition in 1964, following 8-9 3-1 thrashing of waterford. all-ireland final appearance beckoned, wexford providing opposition. game turned rout, tipp won 8-9 3-1. victory gave o sullivan s all-ireland under-21 winners medal.
o sullivan subsequently joined tipperary senior inter-county team, making debut substitute in munster final defeat cork in 1970. became first-choice goalkeeper on team in 1971 , proved successful year. year started in first full munster final against limerick. exciting game developed, however, @ full-time whistle tipp 4-16 3-18 winners. kilkenny provided opposition against tipperary in subsequent all-ireland final, first broadcast in colour telfis Éireann. in exciting , high-scoring game tipp relied on 2 freak goals capture 5-17 5-14 victory. game still remembered image of babs keating discarding worn-out boots , playing last few minutes of match in bare feet. victory gave o sullivan senior all-ireland winners medal in senior grade.
tipperary surrendered munster , all-ireland titles in 1972, , o sullivan replaced goalkeeper in 1973.
inter-provincial
o sullivan lined out munster in inter-provincial hurling championship. played in railway cup final of 1972, however, leinster won title 3-12 1-10.
