the panthers made first trip super bowl after posting one-win regular season 2 years earlier. franchise in ninth year of existence, joining league expansion team in 1995. in second season, posted 12–4 regular season record , advanced nfc championship game, lost eventual super bowl champion green bay packers 30–13 (the packers coincidentally went on defeat patriots in super bowl xxxi 35–21). 1997 onward, had 1 non-losing season (an 8–8 finish in 1999) until suffered through franchise worst 1–15 record in 2001, winning first game of regular season against minnesota vikings. after year, head coach george seifert relieved of duties , replaced john fox, former defensive coordinator new york giants helped lead giants super bowl xxxv in 2000.


with john fox @ helm , team taking advantage of free agent market , salary cap rules, panthers improved in 2002, finishing 7–9 record. in 2003, recorded 11–5 record , won nfc south.


one of free agents carolina signed before 2003 season quarterback jake delhomme. delhomme not picked team in nfl draft, later joined new orleans saints undrafted free agent in 1998. delhomme played nfl europe s frankfurt galaxy in 1999, , along pat barnes, part of double-headed quarterback monster led galaxy world bowl victory on barcelona dragons.


although played 6 games in 5 seasons new orleans, panthers signed delhomme in 2003 backup starting quarterback rodney peete. however, after panthers fell 17–0 third quarter deficit in first game of season against jacksonville jaguars, gaining 1 first down , 36 offensive yards, fox replaced peete delhomme. delhomme ended leading carolina 24–23 comeback victory on jaguars.


delhomme became team s starting quarterback rest of season, throwing 3,219 yards , 19 touchdowns, 16 interceptions. team s main receiving threat multi-talented third-year wide receiver steve smith, specialized kickoff , punt returner. smith caught 88 passes 1,110 yards , 7 touchdowns, rushed 42 yards, gained 439 yards , touchdown returning punts, , recorded 309 kickoff return yards. wide receiver muhsin muhammad constant breakaway threat, recording 54 receptions 837 yards , 3 touchdowns.


however, panthers strength on offense running game, led running backs stephen davis , deshaun foster. davis team s leading rusher franchise record 1,444 yards , 8 touchdowns, while foster rushed 429 yards , caught 26 passes 207 yards. carolina had running rod smart on roster, became known xfl debut jersey name hate me during league s season in 2001. during 2003, smart used panthers other kickoff returner, recording 947 yards , 1 touchdown.


on defense, carolina s main strength defensive line, anchored defensive ends julius peppers (7 sacks , 3 forced fumbles) , mike rucker (12 sacks , 1 interception), , pro bowl defensive tackle kris jenkins (5 sacks , 1 fumble recovery). secondary led defensive backs reggie howard (2 interceptions), mike minter (3 interceptions 100 return yards , 2 touchdowns), deon grant (3 interceptions), , ricky manning jr. (3 interceptions 33 return yards , 1 touchdown).
