porter became interested in arctic when attended robert peary s lectures on greenland in 1892. signed sail on ship miranda surveyor , artist frederick cook s voyage greenland next year. voyage ended ship colliding iceberg , crew being rescued inuit. porter continued travel arctic peary , greenland again in 1896, baffin island in 1897, yukon gold rush in 1898, labrador in 1899, , northern greenland in 1900. porter in charge of astronomical observations on ziegler polar expeditions financed new york businessman william ziegler in 1901 , 1903. second expedition stranded in arctic 3 years when ship, steam yacht america, crushed ice , sank in teplitz bay off rudolf island in russian arctic. in 1906 porter again joined frederick cook in expedition alaska’s mount mckinley. porter’s party surveyed 3,000-square-mile (7,800 km) region around mountain (including painting watercolor of mountain) while cook’s party broke off climb mountain. when parties rendezvoused, porter skeptical of cook s claims climbed mountain.

after arctic adventures, porter settled down in port clyde, maine tried start artists colony @ land s end failed, built rental cottages, , tried farming. there married alice marshall, postmistress. caroline, daughter, born in 1912. took astronomy , hobby of telescope making. encouraged friend in springfield, fellow amateur astronomer , telescope builder james hartness. in 1913, hartness sent porter telescope building ideas , literature along 2 16-inch-diameter glass blanks. porter used these build 16-inch (410 mm) polar reflector incorporated roof of den added on house in design allowed him observe sky indoor heated comfort during long maine winters. porter wrote article design may 1916 issue of popular astronomy. in 1913, using field stones walls crisscrossed land s end porter , 1 other man built stone guesthouse in style of castle complete circular room , square tower calling fieldstone castle.


in 1915, porter returned mit professor of architecture. worked national bureau of standards producing prisms , experimenting silvering of mirrors during world war i.
