when new york state thruway opened near newburgh in 1955, exit 17 standard trumpet interchange connected union avenue , ny 17k. interstate 84 opened north , east of junction in 1963 , west of junction in 1969. no direct connection built between i-84 , thruway, forcing traffic utilize short stretch of union avenue. @ time thruway built there little traffic on later became ny 300 (at time, county road); completion of i-84 , subsequent development of ny 300 corridor has increased traffic volumes in area significantly.


in setup, traffic left freeway , encountered stop signs , traffic signals while traveling 1 road other. inadequate cloverleaf design of junction between i-84 , union avenue led problems, articulateds, must slow negotiate sharp loop slips, , weave traffic attempting leave freeway westbound. i-84 off-slips had stop signs @ ny 300 termini; , there no cloverleaf weaving area northbound through junction. southbound, traffic had weave join ny 300, or bear right join thruway.


for many years state , local officials had wanted build direct connection between i-84 , thruway; however, federal funding did not become available until end of 20th century. new york state thruway authority had project in works link exit 17 directly i-84, bypassing ny 300; , reconstruct interchange between ny 300 , i-84 (exit 7). plans online showed diamond junction interstate 84/ny 300 link; there signals in place left turn not shown in thruway authority plans.


the junction between thruway , interstate 84 works begun in 2001 project delayed when original contractor job found have ties organized crime. of may 2006, total work on project consisted of rebuilding of eastbound exit 7 off-slip, removal of southbound ny 300 eastbound i-84 loop slip, installation of traffic light, , rerouting of southbound ny 300 eastbound i-84 movement via same slip ramp services northbound ny 300 eastbound i-84 movement.


the ramp northbound exit 17 on thruway has been widened 2 lanes , new signage has gone on northbound thruway , westbound i-84.


the direct connection between i-84 , thruway completed in december 2009, after being under construction 5 years.
