german aircraft flew on british empire lines @ first light , particularly interested in jericho , lower jordan area on 9 june highflying rumpler, forced land near jisr ed damieh, after fighting , striving during 5 minutes of close combat @ 16,000 feet advantage of australian pilots. these dawn patrols visited lubban–road sector of front (north of jerusalem on nablus road) , coast sector.


increasingly air supremacy won in may , june used full british squadrons flying straight @ enemy formations whenever sighted while opposition fought if escape seemed impracticable. close scouting of australian pilots had become daily duty was, on other side, utterly impossible these german airmen flew high reconnaissances lacked detail; owing heat haze on jordan valley, australian airmen found reconnaissance @ 10,000 feet difficult.


this new found british , australian confidence led successful machine gun attacks on ottoman ground–troops first carried out during 2 transjordan operations in march , april. inflicted demoralising damage on infantry, cavalry, , transport alike @ same time german airmen became more , more disinclined fly. british , australian pilots in bombing formations first sought out other enemy fight; followed ordinary reconnaissance missions when rest camps , road transport in rear became targets bombs , machine guns.


in mid-june british squadrons, escorted bristol fighters, made 3 bomb raids on el kutrani fields dropping incendiary bombs high explosives bombs, causing panic among bedouin reapers , ottoman cavalry scattered, while escorting australians lashed machine-gun fire unusually busy el kutrani railway station , nearby train. while british squadrons disrupted moabite harvest gangs, bombing raids no. 1 squadron directed against grain fields in mediterranean sector. on same day of el kutrani raid; 16 june squadron sent 3 raids, each of 2 machines, incendiary bombs against crops kakon, anebta, , mukhalid. 1 of successful dropped sixteen fire-bombs in fields , among haystacks, set them alight, , machine gunned workers.
