to give overview of history of house of representatives, figure on right shows seat distribution in house first general elections after world war ii (1946) current situation. left-wing parties towards bottom, christian parties in centre, right-wing parties towards top. occasionally, single-issue (or narrow-focus) parties have arisen, , these shown @ extreme top. vertical lines indicate general elections. although these held every 4 years, resulting coalition governments not finish term without government crisis, followed fresh elections. hence frequent periods shorter 4 years.


current situation

the dutch general election of 2017 held on wednesday, 15 march 2017, , followed call new elections after second rutte cabinet had completed four-year term. new members of house of representatives installed on 23 march 2017. 4 parties required form coalition simple majority (76 seats). rutte s vvd, cda, d66 , cu parties, later agreed form governing coalition required one-seat majority after longest time since election took place, 209 days, surpassing previous record of 208 days set after 1977 general elections.
