the church of saints mary , alkelda founded in 1291 , consists of 14th , 15th century architecture, although there stones indicating existence of church on site perhaps century before. remaining norman artefact section of zig-zag moulding once round door or window, , appears above north aisle. church has three-metre-high perpendicular font cover , replica of middleham jewel. west of church st alkelda s well, waters reputed restore strength weak eyes.


in 1478 king edward iv gave permission leper hospital built on east side of town in association church. today location still known chapel fields, given on horse-training stables of same name, , no trace of hospital or chapel remains.
