the area sectioned in 1769, following treaty of fort stanwix, farm known warren s sleeping place , named after native american trader area named edward warren. surveyed , divided lots, town of warren officially being added greensburg register on november 9, 1816. log cabin home of drake family still stands in area, , 1 of oldest buildings in armstrong county.


with introduction of post office, area officially renamed warren apollo in 1848 avoid confusion post office of town in pennsylvania of same name.


by late 19th century apollo iron & steel company dominated local economy. in 1895, company s president, george gibson mcmurtry, hired famous landscape architect frederick law olmsted design town apollo iron & steel s workers. result neighboring town of vandergrift. in 1911, apollo became home first public library in armstrong county.


the roaring run recreation area located 1 mile upriver (southeast) of apollo , can accessed via apollo kiski river trail. stone remnants of western division of pennsylvania mainline canal, passed through apollo , operated between 1825-1850, can found along roaring run trail. canal made use of kiskiminetas river using system of slackwater dams, , boats floated on river, entering lock located @ mouth of roaring run. there canal ran along path of current roaring run trail, through entire length of borough, entering kiskiminetas river again across river current borough of east vandergrift situated.


the drake log cabin listed on national register of historic places in 1983.
