the northern rhône characterised continental climate harsh winters warm summers. climate influenced mistral wind, brings colder air massif central. northern rhône therefore cooler southern rhône, means mix of planted grape varieties , wine styles different.


syrah red grape variety permitted in red aoc wines sub-region. grape, believed have originated in or close rhône region, known shiraz, name in australia , of english-speaking world, , has become popular consumers around world. wines bearing cornas aoc designation, syrah must used exclusively, whereas other reds northern rhône sub-region may blended white wine grapes, either viognier or marsanne , roussanne, depending on appellation. however, while allowed aoc rules, blending white grapes practiced côte-rôtie.


viognier used white wines condrieu , château-grillet. marsanne , roussanne in turn used whites crozes-hermitage, hermitage, saint joseph, , saint péray.

côte-rôtie aoc - reds of syrah , 20% viognier.
condrieu aoc - whites of viognier only.
château-grillet aoc - whites of viognier.
saint-joseph aoc - reds of syrah , 10% marsanne , roussanne; whites of marsanne , roussanne.
crozes-hermitage aoc - reds of syrah , 15% marsanne , roussanne; whites of marsanne , roussanne.
hermitage aoc - reds of syrah , 15% marsanne , roussanne; whites of marsanne , roussanne.
cornas aoc - reds of syrah only.
saint-péray aoc - sparkling , still whites of marsanne , roussanne.

northern rhône reds identified signature aromas of green olive , smoky bacon.
