juliet mary backhouse née fox, wife of edmund backhouse


the backhouse family rented house 1852 until 1883. edmund backhouse (1824-1906) born in 1824 in darlington in durham. father jonathan backhouse, leading banker in family banking firm of backhouse , co. later become part of barclays bank. edmund joined family banking business , became managing director. member of parliament 1868 until 1881.


in 1848 married juliet mary fox daughter of charles foxwho established famous garden called trebah @ falmouth, cornwall. charles fox died in 1883 , juliet inherited trebah. backhouse family moved cornwall home , continued charles’ work in planting garden. both credited extensive development of grounds @ trebah, introducing rare trees , conifers, tree ferns, , hybrid rhododendrons on next 29 years.

after backhouses left house rented hon. margaret matilda dundas (1826-1907). widow of hon. john charles dundas (1808-1866) of wood hall had been member of parliament. liked entertain , held frequent house parties , tennis tournaments.


after mrs dundas died in 1907 middleton lodge rented pease family until 1936. sir arthur francis pease (1866-1927) born in 1866 in darlington. father arthur pease of cliff house, marske member of parliament , owner of large colliery firm.


arthur went cambridge university , gained ma degree in 1893. joined family coal , ironstone business called pease , partners ltd , became chairman , managing director.


in 1889 married laura matilda ethelwyn allix, daughter of charles peter allix, of swaffham prior house. couple had 4 children. during world war 1, arthur appointed second civil lord of admiralty , received baronetcy in 1920. alderman of durham county council , deputy lord lieutenant of county.


he died in 1927 , wife lady laura pease continued live @ middleton lodge until death in 1936. house tenanted baird family.


major sir james hozier gardiner baird (1883-1966) 9th baronet of saughton rented house 1927 until 1946 born in 1883. son of sir william james gardiner baird. became major in 4th battalion of bedfordshire regiment. married in 1921 unfortunately wife died in following year. remarried in 1923 joan violet barker , several years later couple came live @ middleton lodge. after left in 1946 bought ropner family (see above).
