the founder sōfu teshigahara in 1948


sogetsu founded sōfu teshigahara in 1927. sofu s father ikebana master, taught son childhood. sofu wanted become painter, found possibilities creative expression in using green materials endless, in painting.


he found strict rules of traditional ikebana did not allow individual expression. broke away traditional ikebana , formed school in 1926. in beginning, promoted school through radio.


as of 2016, there have been 4 headmasters. sofu s daughter kazumi gifted artist. became second headmaster until died @ age 47. elder brother, film director hiroshi teshigahara, took over. current headmaster akane, sofu s granddaughter.


the sogetsu school open-minded , avant-gardist school. school 1 of first have english textbooks.

a famous saying sofu teshigahara , credo of sogetsu school sogetsu can done anyone, anywhere, anytime kind of material.


the school led akane teshigahara, founder s granddaughter. noted practitioners include master instructor koka fukushima, masterclasses worldwide have received acclaim in floral art circles.
