construction , upgrade
willacy built @ cost of $65 million management & training corporation u.s. immigration , customs enforcement in may 2006. upgraded in july 2007. in june 2008, 1,086 new beds added. first 2000 beds in facility constructed in 10 pod-like synthetic domes completed in 90 days.
2011 agreement
under new agreement, maximum capacity of facility defined 3,117 beds filled. @ capacity, county received $577,612 per year, total maximum possible revenue county of $2,844,262 per year.
by 2012, facility began seem financially unsustainable. press reports indicated willacy county might responsible bonds sold willacy county local government corporation finance expansion @ jail. key dispute have been future occupancy rate of facility , exact terms of contract federal government.
2015 prison riot
on february 20, 2015, riot broke out among inmates. using pipes weapons, able gain control of portions of prison before officers able regain control on february 21. riot left prison uninhabitable. result, 2,800 inmates sent other facilities.
present usage of facility
the facility vacated after riot , fire.
