coaching career
after ending playing career @ peterborough united, boothroyd appointed coach of under 17, under 19 , reserve teams @ club. tactical nous , drive impressed, , left peterborough in 2001 join norwich city youth team coach under nigel worthington. after 2 years @ carrow road, boothroyd assumed positions of youth development officer , technical director @ west bromwich albion, joining in october 2003. short spell @ hawthorns ended, when appointed first-team coach @ leeds united in july 2004,
watford
he appointed manager of watford in march 2005 @ age of 34. board backed decision despite initial scepticism watford fans , club entered new era under boothroyd. managed steer club clear of relegation, 1–0 victories on stoke city , rotherham united.
at beginning of 2005–06 season, boothroyd signalled intentions declaring aim forthcoming campaign promotion premier league. season progressed, boothroyd s side gained more , more confidence, , come end of season, had cemented place in play-offs. after overcoming crystal palace in two-legged semi-final, boothroyd s team came against club used coach; leeds united. watford won 3–0 , claimed place in top league of english football. rapid improvement in watford s results in first season in charge led boothroyd winning championship manager of month in february 2006. boothroyd continued watford manager duration of 2006–07 season, watford finished 20th , relegated. nevertheless, watford reached fa cup semi-finals, , boothroyd awarded new three-year contract. in july 2006, completed uefa pro licence in coaching.

a start 2007–08 season saw watford twelve points clear @ top of championship after nineteen games. form saw boothroyd named championship manager of month october 2007 after watford maintained 100% record. not sustained , poor run of form in second half of season saw boothroyd coming in criticism team selections, direct style of play , dealings in transfer market. 1 win in thirteen going last game of season saw watford in danger of missing out on play-off spot altogether 1–1 draw against blackpool enough secure sixth place on goal difference ahead of wolverhampton wanderers. in play-off semi-final against hull city watford lost 2–0 @ vicarage road , 4–1 @ kc stadium.
after missing out on immediate return premier league, boothroyd announced intention re-build side next season, , change team s style of play. however, left watford mutual consent on 3 november 2008, after home defeat blackpool.
colchester united
on 2 september 2009, boothroyd announced new manager of league 1 side colchester united, succeeding paul lambert. in first game colchester boss team drew 0–0 southampton , team won 5 of first 9 games in charge. first defeat came in 10th game in 2–1 defeat millwall.
his first signing colchester boss loan of john-joe o toole , first permanent signing kayode odejayi. o toole subsequently signed on permanent basis , signed david prutton leeds united, ian henderson ankaragücü , morten knudsen norway. boothroyd added loan signing franck queudrue arriving on loan birmingham city.
colchester, under boothroyd, in top 6 on half of campaign. however, poor run of form towards end of season saw them win 2 games of last 14 games, , saw them drop outside play-offs , finish in 8th position in league one. @ time, boothroyd indicated intentions cull squad , remove dead wood put promotion push. on 20 may 2010, boothroyd left club take on championship side coventry city.
coventry city
on 20 may 2010, boothroyd announced new manager of championship side coventry city, succeeding chris coleman. first game in charge on 7 august, in boothroyd led coventry city opening day victory on portsmouth both goals freddy eastwood.
on 14 march 2011, boothroyd sacked coventry city after run of poor results, saw club win once in sixteen league games.
northampton town
boothroyd appointed manager of northampton town on 30 november 2011 on one-year, rolling contract. northampton had slipped foot of league 2 table, , 6 points safety, before boothroyd guided them 20th-place finish in 2011–12 season. in 2012–13 season, northampton finished 6th, making playoffs 73 points. beat cheltenham town 2-0 (on aggregate) in two-legged semi-finals before losing 3-0 bradford city in final @ wembley on 18 may 2013. on 21 december 2013, boothroyd sacked northampton after 4-1 defeat wycombe wanderers. club bottom of league two.
england youth teams
on 28 february 2014, boothroyd appointed manager of england national under-20 football team, replaced following year in reshuffle saw him coach under-19 side instead. re-appointed under-20 s manager in august 2016, keith downing taking charge of under-19 s.
boothroyd named caretaker manager of england national under-21 football team, after gareth southgate named interim manager of senior team. manage side remaining 2017 uefa euro championship qualifiers against kazakhstan , bosnia , herzegovina. first match in charge of under-21 s ended in 1–0 win on kazakhstan, , second, 5–0 win on bosnia , herzegovina.
