the entire complex makes tejo power station constitutes old thermoelectric plant supplied power lisbon , surrounding area. building unique amidst lisbon’s architectural setting, , 1 of beautiful examples of portuguese industrial architecture first half of 20th century.


the tejo power station built between 1908 , 1951, thereby undergoing several stages of expansion throughout period. structure follows western type of architecture of iron covered brick, shapes , decorates facades in artistic styles range arte-nouveau, in older sections (low-pressure building), classicism in more contemporary parts (high-pressure building). station’s expansion, additional adjoining terrain , buildings acquired on years, becoming great industrial complex today, various cultural functions, tagus river, namesake, in backdrop.


due state of conservation, museum underwent restoration work between 2001 , 2005 consolidate structure, renew facades , interior machinery and, new museum project, transform today.


in october 2015 edp announced london-based architectural practice al_a formed amanda levete designing kunsthalle sitting alongside existing museum, host wide-ranging programme of exhibitions under leadership of pedro gadahno. new building set open in 2016 maat - museu de arte, arquitetura e tecnologia.
