history

after news of indian mutiny reached sir george grey, governor of cape, sent every available military unit in cape garrison india left cape s military forces badly depleted of manpower. volunteers of cape royal corps found drilling on guns stationed in table bay. result of work on these batteries cape town volunteer artillery (cva) born on 26 august 1857 @ old town house in greenmarket square, cape town.


the regiment 1 of oldest volunteer artillery regiments in world still in existence today, after celebrated 156th anniversary last year on 26 august 2013. major duprat first commanding officer. in 1867 duke of edinburgh escorted cape town simonstown cape town cavalry , upon arrival cape town volunteer artillery, drawn on caledon square, fired royal salute passed towards adderley street. great occasion of royal visit on 24 august, when prince laid foundation stone of graving dock , cvo thundered out again in salute on laying of stone.


the duke of edinburgh impressed bearing of cape town s volunteer soldiers that, few weeks later on 3 october 1867, government notice no 318 promulgated effect had conferred on gunners future designation of prince alfred s own cape town volunteer artillery (paoctva). words cape town later dropped, , title became prince alfred s own volunteer artillery. in 1896, title changed again, prince alfred s own cape artillery.


the unit served in several regional campaigns, including 9th frontier war of 1877 - 1879 , tambookie campaign of 1880 - 1881 on eastern cape frontier, basutoland rebellion in basutoland , second anglo-boer war of 1899 - 1902.


in 1903, title changed prince alfred s own cape field artillery. ten years later, in 1913, unit embodied in citizen force of new union defence forces 6th citizen battery (paocfa).


world war i

although regiment did not serve on european continent during world war i, did take part in south-west africa campaign. regiment mobilised war in august 1914. spent 3 months general louis botha s forces suppress maritz rebellion, after sent upington acted garrison troops while waiting join col van deventer’s southern force move german south-west africa. here carried out patrols in region , artillery guns fought germans during small action @ schuits drift. while garrisoned in upington republican rebel, manie maritz, attempted attack town force of rebels accompanied battery of german artillery guns , 2 qf 1-pounder pom-poms. after four-hour battle rebels surrendered.


the unit took part in south african invasion of german south-west africa in 1915 earned battle honour “south west africa 1915”.


the battery renumbered 1st in 1926. in 1932, name changed cape field artillery (prince alfred s own). 1934 until outbreak of world war ii in 1939, cfa formed part of coast artillery brigade.


world war ii

the cape field artillery reorganised 1st field brigade (cfa) in february 1940 , in january 1941, 1 field regiment (v), south african artillery (p.a.o.c.f.a.). fought during operation crusader @ bardia, sollum, halfaya pass , @ gazala during battle of gazala. 2 field battery lost during battle of gazala when 1st field brigade (cfa) fought part of south african 2nd infantry division under command of general hendrik klopper. fired first , last rounds before fortress @ tobruk surrendered on 21 june 1942.


1 , 3 field batteries, joined 14 field battery, fought in first battle of el alamein in july 1942 , in second battle of el alamein lasted between 23 october 11 november 1942, part of 1st south african division. on 1 day during first battle 3 batteries fired on 9000 shells break several german attacks. after these engagements regiment returned south africa briefly in december 1942.


the regiment returned north africa in 1943 merged 6th field regiment form 1/6 field regiment (v), south african artillery (p.a.o.c.f.a.). joined south african 6th armoured division , moved italy in april 1944 fought in battle of monte cassino , other battles , engagements in 6th armoured division involved.


post war

the title changed again, in 1960, regiment tygerberg. title, imposed on regiment, not popular, , in 1963 changed cape field artillery, without princely style, no longer appropriate south africa had become republic.


during post-war period regiment mobilised several times duty in south african border war(1966 1989), including operation savannah in 1976. in august/september 1988 cape field artillery provided 140 millimetres (5.5 in) battery 10 artillery brigade in order counter cuban forces threatening south-west african border.
