the converted mill


probably 1 of 2 domesday mills. mill marked on map of 1706. next known mention of wier mill in 1810 when mill marked on map accompanying enclosure award. in 1840 james phillips owner-occupier of mill, water corn mill 12 feet (3.66 m) waterwheel driving 2 pairs of stones. pond of weir mill square in shape , covers area of on ¼ acre. mill passed james thomas phillips c.1855 , mr. t j dewe c,1893. g e hide working mill in 1905 , s r anscombe bought mill in 1913. mill last ground corn in 1930 , bought whitbread ltd., maidstone brewers, used part of mill store hops. mill subsequently passed ownership of wm. lillico & son , used general store. during time timber part of mill buildings becoming derelict.



the surviving mill building

the timber clad original mill building dates reign of queen anne. brick extension added in 2 stages, last part being built in 1889. roller mills of 4½ sack capacity installed c.1893 boiler , steam engine, principally drive roller mills whilst waterwheel drove stones. steam engine beam engine, sold buyer in usa.



the wooden mill

this 4 storeys in height, base being of brick , upper storeys timber. 12 feet (3.66 m) diameter waterwheel overshot eighty buckets , carried on 9 inches (230 mm) diameter cast iron axle. wooden upright shaft 6 inches (150 mm) diameter, reducing 4 inches (100 mm) @ first floor level. carried great spur wheel , iron crown wheel of 6 feet (1.83 m) diameter. received drive steam engine mill driven way if necessary. mill drove 3 pairs of millstones.



the brick mill

this built in 2 parts, latterly known middle room , end room , last part being built in 1889. mill 6 storeys in height, dwarfing original mill. middle room contained roller mills, 6 in total.
