legal career
alexander read law in new york , admitted provincial bar of new jersey in 1720. served attorney general colony of new york 1721 1723. alexander sought membership of gray’s inn in february 1, 1725, , returned london large legal library enabled him cite legal precedent in court. distinct advantage colonial lawyer. james duane, ward , later son-in-law of robert livingston, third lord of livingston manor, read law clerk in alexander s office , became proficient in area of rights , jurisdiction in land disputes. alexander practiced law, engaged in mercantile pursuits, , built considerable fortune.

politics
in 1721, alexander appointed governor s council in new york. in 1723, added council in new jersey , same year made attorney general of new jersey. opposed policies of new york governor william cosby , in 1732, cosby succeeded in having alexander removed council. in 1733, alexander started anti-cosby newspaper, new york weekly journal, peter zenger publisher. alexander principal author of pieces critical of governor cosby. following year, zenger arrested on sedition charges, jury acquitted zenger in 1 of first instances of jury nullification. alexander , william smith served zenger s attorneys until both disbarred after challenged commissions of judges hearing case.
in 1730, alexander chairman of committee revise new york city charter; given freedom of city following year. when lord de la warr appointed governor in 1737, alexander reinstated bar , reappointed governor s council of new york. removal council of new jersey disregarded. alexander became vocal proponent of emerging whig political views, , engaged in various civic efforts well. in 1751, raised funds establish king s college.
later life
