the oldest list of townsfolk in town book of 1452 enumerates 42 households in soltau, represents 200 inhabitants based on conditions of time. around 1600 there 100 households in soltau, corresponds 500 inhabitants lived in 70 houses. black death raged in 1626 , caused population plummet dramatically. after that, number of inhabitants rose @ first; accelerating 1940. large increase in 1974 due regional reform , incorporation of 16 surrounding villages. following short drop in numbers population grew again in 1990s , reached maximum in 2005 @ 22,044. according internal censuses town has greater numbers, e.g. in 2001 23,508, due inclusion of second homes. since numbers have dropped slowly. trend should stop in next few years according study bertelsmann foundation. 2025 study forecast population of 21,614.
