in 1953, livsey served first combat tour platoon leader 3rd infantry division in south korea. commanded first company 30th infantry @ fort benning, georgia in 1954. 1958 1961, served in germany company commander in 2nd armored rifle battalion, 36th infantry, 3rd armored division. served second combat tour in vietnam 1967 1968 4th infantry division assistant chief of staff, g-3 (operations), , commander, 2nd battalion, 35th infantry of 3rd brigade task force.
in may 1971, livsey took command of 2nd brigade 4th infantry division (mechanized) @ fort carson. later returned fort carson in 1974 serve assistant division commander (support) , assistant division commander (maneuver) 4th id (m) until june 1976. july 1977 may 1979, commanding general of infantry center , commandant of united states army infantry school @ fort benning, georgia.
in may 1979, livsey became commanding general of 8th infantry division (mechanized), united states army europe served until june 1981. assumed position of commanding general, vii corps, usareur, , served there until july 1983. july 1983 until april 1984 served deputy commanding general, united states army forces command commanding general of third united states army, fort mcpherson, georgia.
other notable assignments include, corps chief of staff in korea, executive army chief of staff in washington, d.c. , southeast asia, staff officer in office of research , development, , leadership instructor @ west point.
in may 1984, , until retirement on june 30, 1987, livsey served commander-in-chief, united nations command/commander-in-chief combined forces command/ commander, united states forces, korea/commanding general eighth united states army.
