in april 2004, announced family introduced around character of mickey miller (joe swash). casting team held workshops, screen tests , script readings potential actors. shana swash, sister of joe swash, cast mickey s younger half sister demi miller. other family members included stepfather keith (david spinx), mother rosie (gerry cowper) , demi s twin brother darren, played charlie g. hawkins. casting director katrine collins had worked hawkins before , decided cast him darren miller.


the family publicised troublemakers joining in order drum conflict existing characters. louise berridge said, lot trouble. dog dodgy [...] re set cause havoc on square... family s introduction in september 2004 followed survey in daily mirror newspaper, suggested 57% of eastenders viewers thought soap had lost appeal.


hawkins discussed character in 2004: darren s bit of rough kid. s great character play. there resemblances of myself in there, although s matter of opinion. s play that, can have laugh .
