during denis reign, lisbon became 1 of europe s centres of culture , learning. first university in portugal, called estudo geral (general study), founded signing of document scientiae thesaurus mirabilis in leiria on 3 march 1290. lectures in arts, civil law, canon law, , medicine given, , on 15 february 1309, king granted university charter, magna charta privilegiorum. university moved between lisbon , coimbra several times, , installed permanently in coimbra in 1537 order of king john iii.


as devotee of arts , sciences, denis studied literature , wrote several books on topics ranging government administration hunting, science , poetry, ordering translation of many literary works galician-portuguese (portuguese had not yet evolved distinct language), among them works attributed grandfather alfonso x. patronised troubadours, , wrote lyric poetry in troubadour tradition himself. best-known work cantigas de amigo, collection of love songs satirical songs, contributed development of troubador poetry in iberian peninsula. told, 137 of songs attributed him, in 3 main genres of galician-portuguese lyric, preserved in 2 16th-century manuscripts, cancioneiro da biblioteca nacional , cancioneiro da vaticana. spectacular find in 1990 american scholar harvey sharrer brought light pergaminho sharrer, contains, albeit in fragmentary form, 7 cantigas d amor king denis musical notation. these poems found in same order in 2 known codices.
