amos bronson alcott, teacher , member of new england non-resistance society, came idea of fruitlands in 1841. traveled england following year, hoped find support , people participate him in experiment. england home strongest group of supporters, group of educators had founded alcott house, school based on philosophy of teaching. 1 of supporters charles lane, journeyed him united states on 21 october 1842.
in may 1843, lane purchased 90-acre (36 ha) wyman farm in harvard, massachusetts $1800. though alcott had come idea of fruitlands himself, not involved in purchasing land, largely because penniless after failure of temple school , subsequent years in concord, massachusetts farmer. in july, alcott announced plans in dial: have made arrangement proprieter of estate of hundred acres, liberates tract human ownership . had officially moved farm on june 1 , optimistically named fruitlands despite ten old apple trees on property.
in principle, fruitlands reformers did not believe in purchasing property; lane said following on subject: not recognize purchase of land; redemption debasing state of proprium, or property, divine uses, understand; whom world esteems owners found yielding individual rights supreme owner commune attracted 14 residents, including alcott , lane families. july, community had succeeded in planting 8 acres (3.2 ha) of grains, 1 of vegetables, , 1 of melons.
fruitlands failed winter after opened, largely due food shortages , accompanying unrest in inhabitants. rigors of new england winter proved severe members of fruitlands.
