early liberal party speakers avoided condemning lds theology or polygamy, because several godbeites practised polygamy. eli b. kelsey , henry w. lawrence, both godbeites, gained election first officers of new party. non-mormons, including r. n. baskin, george r. maxwell, , judge dennis toohy of corinne, played active role in party, stayed in background initially, hoping ex-mormon godbeites prove more effective leaders , candidates.

like many political parties of time, liberal party ran newspaper, although unofficially. godbe s utah magazine became mormon weekly tribune , in 1873 3 anti-mormon newcomers kansas bought , became salt lake tribune. until liberal party disbanded in 1893, tribune operate liberal party s de facto political organ. similarly, deseret evening news, owned lds church, functioned people s party organ.
