the original xd cards available in 16 mib 512 mib capacities. type m card, released in february 2005, uses multi-level cell (mlc) architecture achieve theoretical storage capacity of 8 gib. of june 2010, type m cards available in sizes 256 mib 2 gib. however, type m suffers slower read/write speeds original cards.
the type h card, first released in november 2005, offers higher data rates type m cards (theoretically as 3 times faster). of 2008, type h cards available in 256 mib, 512 mib, 1 gib, , 2 gib capacities. both fuji , olympus discontinued production of type h cards in 2008, citing high production costs.
the type m+ card, first released in april 2008, offers data rates 1.5 times of type m cards. of 2008, cards available in 1 , 2 gib capacities.
olympus says xd cards support special picture effects when used in olympus cameras, though these software features not intrinsically hardware-dependent. type h , m+ cards however, required in newer models capture video @ high rate (640×480 @ 30fps). due changes in cards storage architecture, newer type m , h cards may have compatibility issues older cameras (especially video recording). compatibility lists available olympus: olympus america s , fujifilm s. newer cards incompatible card readers.
